Surnames: Smith, Austin, Vincent, Netherland, Workman, Paschall
I am seeking help in confirming or refuting my speculation about the parents of Ruth Mary Smith. I believe that she was a daughter of Carney C. Smith and Sarah (Sally) Netherland but cannot confirm it.

Ruth Mary Smith was born March 1, 1852, probably in Obion County. She married George Thomas Austin in Weakley County on Jan. 16, 1873. The marriage record just says R M Smith & G T Austin.

In the 1880 census, they are at Abernatheys in Weakley County:
Green [George] Austin 33
Mary Austin 28
Norah [Nora] Austin 6
not named [Jesse] Austin 3
Robbert [Robert] Austin 1

In 1900, they are in Civil Dist. 1, Weakley County:
George T Austin 53
Ruth M Austin 48
Jessie R Austin 22
Robert C Austin 21
Dora Austin 18
Luby L Austin 16
Thomas F Austin 14
Henry Austin 11

Eldest daughter Nora Austin was nearby, married to William Nicholas Vincent.

In 1910, the Austins are in Civil Dist. 1, Weakley County:
George T Austin 63
Mallie Austin 58
Jesse Austin 32
Frank Austin 24
Henry Austin 21
Missouri Workman 53 nurse
Rebecca Paschall 29 cook

The census was enumerated on April 20, 1910. Ruth Mary Smith Austin died 9 days later, on April 29, 1910, of consumption. Her illness must be the reason for the nurse and cook in the household.

Unfortunately, the death record does not give any information about her parents. I searched for a Ruth or Mary Smith of the right age in Weakley County in 1870 but did not find a fit. I noticed that other family trees stopped at Ruth Mary Smith without finding her parents.

The death record of her son Jesse Reece Austin says that Ruth Mary Smith was born in Obion County.

I found an 8 year old Mary Smith in Obion in 1860:
C C Smith 45
Sarah Smith 43
Jane Smith 22
Lucinda Smith 10
Andrew Smith 13
Milley [Permilia] Smith 12
Mary Smith 8
John H Smith 6
Robert H Smith 3
William E Smith 1 month

In 1870, they are in Dist. 5, Weakley County, but misspelled as Smyth:
Carney C Smyth 65
Sally Smyth 57
Mary R Smyth 19
John H Smyth 16
Robert H Smyth 13
Thomas T Smyth 10 [Did they change William's name?]

I suspect that this Mary R Smith is the Ruth Mary Smith who married George Thomas Austin in January 1873, but I haven't found proof. I am hoping that someone has researched this Smith family and may be able to verify whether I have the right Mary Smith.

Also, the death record of Andrew Smith says that his mother's maiden name was "Sally Netherland" but I have not been able to confirm that in other records.
