Dr. William Cooke Lyons was born in 1868 and was a white doctor in Rogersville TN although he lived in Surgoinsville and the home he lives in still stands and is occupied by his white granddaughter Jessie.

His son, George Connor Lyons was a doctor in Surgoinsville, TN and delivered my younger brother in 1944. As a boy growing I came to know a black man everyone called Charley Lyons who was a caretaker at the Lyons farm just east of Surgoinsville. Charley never married. No one knows for sure but the story goes that Dr. William C. Lyons was asked by a very sick black woman who knew she was soon to die if he would take care of her son and daughter after she died. Dr. Lyons told her he would take the son. Some people say his name was Charley Miller before he came to the Lyons farm and is listed as Charles Miller, age 50; black (negro) in the 1930 census records along with William C. Lyons and his wife Kittie.
