Hi Bill,
Thanks for your reply. I have seen the Fred & Virginia La Plant in the 1910 Dewey County Census. His race is listed as Indian and the children are not the same as the 1900 census in Clark County. This Fred from 1910 is also listed on the 1900 census in Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, Dewey County, SD.
I appreciate everyones help in looking into this, but my "Fred" LaPlant was not Indian.

I know from following (& documents) the family, that Madres divorced Fred in Feb. 1904 and married John Understock in Spink County, SD. In the divorce document, she stated that she last saw Fred on June 21, 1901; when he just left and never came back. I've heard from family stories that he went out fur trapping and never came back, and in another story I heard he was shot dead. But if he was shot dead before 1904, why would Madres need the divorce document?

Thanks for the info on fur trapping, it does make sense that it would be done in the winter season. So, if he was last seen June 21, 1901- then the story of fur trapping is probably not true either. What else could he have went to do in Summer? Unless he did mysteriously met his death?

Thanks again for helping me work this out.
