Seeking Peter Pound Parentage

I am having a problem finding out who my great grandfather's parents were. His name was Peter Hilliard Christian Pound and he was born in Lexington County, South Carolina. His death certificate lists his date of birth as July 1850.

He is not on the 1850 census.

He is on the 1860 census living with the Goodwyn/Goodwin family. His birth year there is 1847.

He is not on the 1870 census. Neither are the Goodwin's.

He is on the 1880 census with wife number 1. His birth year there is 1851.

He is on the 1900 census with wife number 2. His birth year there is 1849.

Here is what I have cobbled together as a theory:

Looking back to the 1800 census, there is only one Pound in the Lexington County area:

Peter Pound I (okay, this is a good clue, I think!)

1810: again, just Peter Pound I.

1820: No Peter Pound I. Just a Margaret Pound. No other Pound's. I speculate that this was his wife.

1830: No Peter Pound. No Margaret Pound. Just a Barbara Pound. Hmm. Is that Margaret going by a middle name? Is that a daughter who became the head of house after Margaret died?

1840: Jacob Pound, Barbara Pound. Theory: Jacob is Peter and Margaret's son.

1850: Daniel Pound, 1821 with wife and children (son of Peter and Margaret); Barbara Pound b 1788 (err...Sister of Peter I?) ; Ann Pound b 1757 (mother of Peter I?); Jacob Pound b 1814 with NO wife but five children (son of Peter I and Margaret)

1860 Margaret Pound b 1787 with the Pearson family and a Peter Pound II b 1825 (Peter I and Margaret's son), Barbara Pound head, b 1789 (daughter of Ann Pound and ?, sister of Peter I?), Jacob Pound b 1816 with one of his children in another home, two of them in different homes, and two missing, Peter Pound (MINE!) with the Goodwyn family, Mahaley Pound b 1810 with a Josephine Pound born 1845, Mahala Pound b 1817 with the Redman family (totally not sure where they fit in!!)

So, finally: My theory is that Peter Pound (1850) is the son of Jacob Pound and unknown wife. Wife died shortly after Peter was born around 1849-1850. Peter was sent to live with someone who could take care of him before his father was enumerated but possibly AFTER the new family was enumerated. The rest of the children were sent to live with whoever would take them, leaving the father with just one child in 1860.

This would make Peter Pound 1850 the son of Jacob Pound 1817 who was the son of Peter Pound 1780's.

Does anyone have any other ideas or information that might help?
