Colonel Joseph Hayes who was killed by Bloody Bill Cunningham in 1781, had minor children that are unnamed. WIlliam Hayes would be the right age.

Hays, Col. Joseph; Box 45, Pack 1028; Probate Judge Office. Abbeville, SC. Admr. bond, 96 Dist. We Alice Hays, Henry Pearson and James Waldrop are bound unto John Ewing Calhoun Ord. in the sum of fourteen thousand pounds money. Dated at White Hall the 8 Nov 1782. Inventory made 31 Jan 1783 by Thomas Johnson, James Smith, James Gogens. Alice Hays was the widow. The cit. was read at a public gathering at the house of Richard Griffin the 1 Nov 1782. She lived between Little River and Bush River. 96 Dist. on 29 April 1786 Henry Pearson one of the securities to the ordinary, pr. Alice Hays (Now Alice Stewart, Admrx. of Joseph Hays decd.) On oath saith that Wm. Stewart husband of said admrs. have done several acts lending to the wasting of the est. by disposing of property at private sale and not agreeable to law and applying the money arising from the same to the discharges of his own debts and not to those of the est. He has sold seven negroes to Samuel Aiken and Prince and Doll and three chn. to his father in North Carolina. A wagon and some horses and a negro called Julius that is recorded in Laurens Court House. This deponent and others are greatly endangered and the property of the minors chn. of the decd. Joseph Hays is wasted in a shameful manner. Sworn before me this 29 April 1786, William Moore, J.P.
