Why did he [Jessee] migrate to South Carolina?
Although we don't know for sure why Jesse Moody migrated from Granville County, North Carolina, to 96 District, South Carolina, we do know that the Royal Governor of South Carolina was offering incentives, in the form of land grants, to emigrants who settled in 96 District. The big coastal rice planters wanted a buffer popualtion between themselves and the Cherokee Indians, who were still conducting raids at this time in history. I have not found a South Carolina land grant to Jesse as of yet, but I'd bet that one exists..
96 District was later divided into smaller districts, which became counties. Greenville District was one of these. .
Fort 96 was a major British strong-hold in the South during the Revolutionary War. The fact that Jesse remained in the area suggests that he was not a Tory, since most British supporters had to leave the area after the War, for fear of reprisals. I've found no evidence that he fought for the Patriots either, so he may have been a neutral. New information may turn up at some point.
