I have ancestors, 4 that I have record of, buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Beaufort. When I went to see the graves recently, I discovered a mystery. The plot of my family members had one of the original markers, a flat stone with names and dates intact. There was however, no trace of any other original markers. Which wouldn't be all that mysterious, except that one of them was installed in 1983, not that long ago. In addition, there was a very new, very nice headstone with both of the surnames on it but no other information. There are only a few of us descendants and no one knows how this new marker got there or what might have happened to the old ones. The 4 original plot markers (corners) are still in they're place. The City of Beaufort actually owns the cemetery and they have repeatedly advised me that they have no knowledge of this. I have talked with everyone from the Beaufort coroner's office to the newspaper to local monument companies and no one has any idea not only how a new headstone got there nor who would in fact know. Apparently, no single person or persons is responsible for the cemetery. I'm looking for any help or advice I can get. Thanks!
