I'm interested in communicating with anyone researching african-american CLINKSCALES or NANCE family in Abbeville, SC or Newberry County, SC. My g-g-grandfather was Robert CLINKSCALES a former slave who married Celia (or possibly a Mary) NANCE, whose father may have been a Drayton NANCE. Their white slave owners may have been John Thomas CLINKSCALES and Susan (Sudie) NANCE.
My great-grandparents were George Henry CLINKSCALES and Mary THOMAS who lived in Lowndesville, Abbeville County, SC.
Their children include my Grandfather, Theodore Roosevelt CLINKSCALES b. about 1905 who married Mary RHODES. Other children of George Henry and Mary CLINKSCALES were Robin (also called Robert, John Thomas, Harvey, Harry, Henry, Mahala Lester(ML), Benjamin and Fannie Bell. All of them, including their mother, Mary relocated from Abbeville to Youngstown, OH in the early 1900s. George Henry never left SC. It is believed that their were other children who either died young or decided to stay in SC when the others moved to Ohio.
I'm very eager to hear from African-American CLINKSCALES researchers as well as white researchers who might have info on the white slaveholders. Thanks. Kay Clinkscales
