Richard B. Steele Sr., 67, of Clapper Hill, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 15, 2012, at home with his loving family at his side. He married the former Verna Scott of Tunkhannock, on Dec. 23, 1961, and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Burt was born in Sayre, on Oct. 12, 1944, a son of the late Richard D. and Elsie Sutton Steele. He served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War. He worked for International Harvester in Tunkhannock and for Harris Paving in Tunkhannock and Conti Construction and was retired as a truck driver for PennDOT in 1999. He was a member of the Gardner Warner Post #154, Elk Lake, and the VFW Endless Mountains Memorial Post 3583, Mehoopany. Burt loved the outdoors: he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, having built a table for each of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burt loved playing cards, especially Texas hold'em and pitch. He loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren; supporting them in all their many endeavors. Surviving are wife Verna, at home; three daughters and sons-in-law: Linda (Stephen) Garinger of New Albany, April (Tad) Bair of Clapper Hill, and Missy Pettitt of Harrisburg; son Richard Steele Jr. of Fairdale; two sisters: Barb (Bill) Brown of Clapper Hill, and Anna Brown of Montrose; three brothers: Mike Steele of Urbana, Ill., Terry (Lesha) Steele of Dimock, and John (Diane) Koloski of Fairdale.
He was predeceased by two brothers, James Steele and David Koloski. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 20, at 10 a.m.. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with pastor Howard D. Carr, pastor of the Moxie Community Church, officiating. Friends may call on Thursday evening, April 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing. There will be a pass in review by the Legion on Thursday at 7 p.m.. at the funeral home.
