YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Stella (Skrzypek) Shipek, 86, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for her on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church.

Stella was born in Europe in Proszowice, Poland
on April 15, 1926, a daughter of Frank and Mary Broschtschak.

During World War II, Stella was detained and then relocated from Poland to a German work camp, where she met her future husband.

In December of 1950, she came to this country with two small children in tow and in 1980 became a proud citizen of the United States of America.

She was an employee of the City of Youngstown Board of Education, working at South High School and retiring in April of 1986 with 23 years of service.

Stella belonged to St. Stanislaus Church.
She was a member of the church’s Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and had helped in the kitchen making pierogi.
She also belonged to the Krakusky Hall Society.

She loved to crochet afghans and was a member of the St. Elizabeth Church Crochet Club, where she met every Wednesday with her fellow crocheting friends. She also enjoyed sewing and was still making clothes and patchwork blankets. She loved her flowers and her garden. She recently planted the seedlings for her outdoor flowers.

Stella was full of life and was always trying something new. In the past three years, she had started wearing blue jeans. She decorated her home every holiday and continued to enjoy craft making.
She made everyone around her smile because she always had a smile on her face. She loved music and her favorite song was “Taking Care of Business.”
She also loved the water and enjoyed watching the geese and ducks swim on the lake. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren and was very proud of each and every one of them.

Stella was preceded in death by her husband, John Shipek, whom she married Aug. 15, 1945, and who died Dec. 26, 1979, and by her grandson, Shawn Holtzman.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Wanda Holtzman of Columbus, Ohio, Barbara Shipek of Negley and Mary Lynn (Robert) Johnson of Poland; her grandchildren, Terrence Johnson of Poland, Ohio, Michael Johnson of Columbus, Heather (Corry) Burr and Heidi (Steve) Fox, all of Columbus, James (Christie) Holtzman of Conneaut, Rebecca (Spencer) Tripp of Columbus and Eric (Sally) Holtzman of Iowa; and her great-grandchildren, Morgan and Christopher Holtzman of Conneaut and Kaylee Tripp of Columbus, OH.

Calling hours will take place at the church on Friday from 9 to 10 a.m., one hour prior to the Mass.

Interment will take place at Lake Park Cemetery.
