Opal Jeanette Means was born January 9, 1934 in Durham, Oklahoma to Minnie and Oliver Means. She passed away May 6, 2015 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 81 years, three months and 27 days.
Opal moved with her family to Cheyenne as a child. She attended and graduated from Cheyenne School. She then earned her Nurse's Aid certification and worked at the Cheyenne Convalescent Home. She later worked for several local businesses including Gray School Store, Moad Drug Store and Daugherty Variety Store as well as Seay's Drug Store and Paul Jones Drug in Elk City. Opal began working at the County Clerk's Office in 1967. She was appointed as the County Clerk in 1978 and held that position until she retired in 1993. Opal was very active in her community where she was a 43 year member of the Sorosis Club and a member of the Western Plains Library. She also helped with the Red Cross Blood Drive and the Election Board. She was a member of Cheyenne First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister-in-law, Pamela Means and a niece, Teresa Means Bennett.
She is survived by her son, William (Billy Don) Farmer, Sayre, OK; a granddaughter, Amber Dawn Miller, Cheyenne, OK; two great granddaughters, Jazzman Christine Miller and Shelbie Rene Andrew; her brother, Edward Douglas (Sonny) Means, Mustang, OK; two nephews, Michael Means and wife, Mary, Edmond, OK and David Means and wife, Mary Jo, Mesa, AZ, a niece, Connie Pannes and husband, John, Arlington, TX; the mother of her granddaughter, Christie Sherlock, Sayre, OK and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be held May 8, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Cheyenne First Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Dennis Hooper. Burial will be at Cheyenne Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Condolences may be made online at www.whineryfs.com
