Peggy J. Mathews
Peggy was born in Newark, Ohio (Licking County) on September 13, 1927 to the late Samuel Roan Shackleford, Sr. and Geneva (White) Shackleford.
She died Friday, February 1, 2013 at Autumn Healthcare.
She was 85.
She is preceded in death by her sons Henry Mathews Jr. and Angelo Mathews; sisters Norma Jean Shackleford and Helen King; and her brother Raymond Shackleford.
Peggy is survived by her sons Steven (Melanie) Mathews and Vincent (Earline) Mathews, both of Chicago; grandchildren Tracy (Philander) Murdock Jr. and Jeremy Mathews and his fiancé Selena; father of the children and good friend Henry (Catherine) Mathews of Merrillville, Indiana; brothers Samuel Shackleford Jr. and Daniel Shackleford; sisters Esther Thompson, Geneva Black, Rebecca (Kenneth) Black, Kathryn (Willie I) Thomas, Cynthia Shackleford, Brenda Greene, Deborah (Glenn) Bower; and numerous nieces and nephews; special cousins John Boyd, Helen Roulette, Mary Jane Smith, Mary Carter and second cousin Ralph Franklin; and her special friend Jeanne Shonebarger.
Peggy attended Newark High School.
She was a member of the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Newark, Ohio where she sang in the choir.
She worked as a packer at Owens-Corning and was a member of the Glass Molder Pottery and Plastics and Allied Workers Int'l Union.
She was a nurse's assistant at the Heath Nursing Home. Peggy worked at Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago in the advertising department as a printer.
Peggy played the piano, and her love of music inspired her children to become musicians.
She loved to entertain, shop, and was a true fashionista when it came to clothing, shoes and cosmetics.
She was a guardian angel to her family and friends and she always made new friends no matter where she went.
The funeral service will be held Friday February 8, 2013 with the viewing from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday and from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Friday with funeral services immediately following at the Criss-Schoedinger Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Newark Memorial Gardens with Rev. Dr. Michael Noble officiating.
