Julia Mae (Christian) Dokes, 86, a former, longtime resident of Smithfield, Ohio, died Sunday, April 29, in Phoenix, Arizona. Her loved ones’ prayers for a peaceful death, at home in the presence of a sweet, sweet spirit, were answered.
She was her family’s chief spoiler of children and pets.
She was the first best friend of her three children: Cheryl Fletcher of Smithfield, Ohio, Lt. Col. (ret) Fred Dokes III of Austin, Texas, and Jennifer Dokes of Phoenix.
Julia was born on January 19, 1932, to Leota (Smith) and Charles Christian.
She graduated from Smithfield High School in 1949. She was married for 50 years to the Rev. Fred Dokes Jr., who preceded her in death on August 10, 2000; a brother, Sheridan Christian, and three sisters, Marguerite (Christian) West, Elaine (Christian) Dulin and Eunice Christian, also preceded her in death.
In addition to her children, she is survived by two sisters, Carol Cooper of McIntyre, Ohio, and Judy Cylar of Cleveland, Ohio; a brother Vernon Christian of El Cajon, California; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and scores of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
At her request, there will be no services.
