Mr. A. Dean “Doc” Poteat, age 81 of Marion passed away on Monday, July 5, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Poteat was born in McDowell County on January 2, 1923 and was the son of the late Arthur Lee Poteat and Carrie Jones Gibson Poteat. He attended the Non-Denominational Church of God in Marion. He was a retired vice-president from Morrison-Knudsen Corp. His projects included such items as aero-propulsion wind tunnels, lock and dams, power plants, missile silos, etc. During his tenure with Morison-Knudsen Corp., he was awarded the Beaver Award, one of the most prestigious awards given by the heavy construction industry. His projects were constructed literally all over the world. He was a U. S. Army veteran having served in World War II. He served as a paratrooper during the Normandy invasion. The U. S. Army from Fort Bragg will provide military honors. After retirement he later managed similar projects for Ebasco Constructors, Inc. After retiring from Ebasco he later consulted with various firms, managing similar projects.
Mr. Poteat is survived by his wife, Pansy Jones Poteat of the home; two children, Boyd D. Poteat and wife Debbie of Tullahoma, TN and Joel Poteat and wife Pamela of Knoxville, TN; sister, Rebecca (Becky) Ward of Marion; brother, Glenn B. Poteat of Cleveland, TN; three grandchildren, Boyd Aaron, Joshua and Carrie and four great grandchildren, Blake, Trent , Sallie Grace and Samuel.
Services for Mr. Poteat were held on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at 3 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Ministers Cecil Wilson and Tom Cooper officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment was in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
