My sister transcribed the following marriage bond from a handwritten copy found at the Beaufort, NC library. The marriage bond for James Webb and Sophia Bell may represent the origin of the name of their son, James Barney Webb.

Marriage Bond for James Webb and Sophia Bell
May 2 1821 State of North Carolina:

Know all men by these presents that we James Webb and James Barney - are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency Jesse Franklin Esquire; Governor, Captain General and Commander in Chief, in and over the said State, in the sum of five hundred pounds current money to be paid to the said Governor, his successors or assigns. To the which payment will and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated this 2nd day of May A. D. 1821.

The condition of the above Obligation is such, that whereas the above bounden James Webb hath made application for a License for a Marriage, intended to be had and solemnized between him and Sophia Bell of the County aforesaid. Now in case it shall not appear at any time hereafter, that there is any lawful cause to obstruct the said Marriage, then the above obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
