I have just now come upon this post and can hardly believe what I just read. I went to the link and read the full story as well. HOW - WHY would anyone do such a horrible thing?! How will those, like me, who have finally gotten back, just a little ways, in their search even begin to find records that have now been destroyed? Too bad ancestry could not have gotten them first! At least they would have been sorted, scanned and placed online for us!!!

Can anyone help me on this? From Census records and from reading what a few researchers have found, it is strongly suggested that my ancestor, William Jackson, b. abt. 1798 in NC may have been from Franklin County, NC. He and his sons and his grandchildren and down for several more generations have a LOAD of WILLIAMs in their descendant's lines. My William's wife was Mary. I know nothing of her, except that she was born abt. 1811 in either Georgia or Alabama. One of William's daughters, on the 1880 census, states that her mother was born in Alabama, while the son states Georgia. I do not believe they are from different mothers, as the daughter states that MARY was her mother's name. Not to mention that the daughter and son were born close together, in age.

William, and wife, Mary, are seen in the 1850 census of Butler County, Alabama. They have 2 sons: Cleton and William. They have 4 daughters: Ann, Emeline, Catherine and Martha. Cleton is my direct ancestor. I know of what became of Emeline and her families. I know nothing of the youngest son, William, nor of the other 3 daughters: Ann, Catherine & Martha, although I have tried to find what became of them.

Please, if you have a WILLIAM JACKSON born about that time, (1798) can you tell me anything about him?? Does anyone have a William born about that time that 'slipped away in the night' or moved down to Georgia and then on to Alabama? I have found my William in the 1840 census of Butler County, AL, but then nothing for 1830. I have been trying to find his parents since 1999.
