DARDEN STEVENS OATES in Sampson County, NC (1728-1862)

Margaret Peggy___?___ was born on 20 June 1783, as per her headstone. She married William Billy DARDEN prior to 1808 and had the following children: Reddick DARDEN, Catherine DARDEN (married Jesse OATES, son of Jethro OATES and Elizabeth IVEY), John DARDEN, William Jackson DARDEN, Nancy DARDEN and Maria DARDEN. William Billy DARDEN died around 1818 and had a will naming Peggy DARDEN as his wife.

The above William Billy DARDEN was first married, about 1773, to Nancy HOBBS (1755-1800) and had at least one son Henry. Henry is also mentioned in William Billy DARDEN’S will. William Billy DARDEN was the son of __?__. William Billy DARDEN had sisters named Suzannah DARDEN (1756-1810) and Nancy DARDEN and a brother named Joseph (1768-1814).

After William Billy DARDEN’s death, Peggy married __?__ STEVENS and had Margaret STEVENS (b. 1823) and Barnabas STEVENS (b.1825). It is thought that MAYBE, repeat MAYBE, Peggy married either OATES STEVENS OR WILLIAM STEVENS, the sons of Barnabas STEVENS and Lydia OATES STEVENS. Oates and William STEVENS were both mentioned in their father’s will and appeared in some early censuses. No wills or estate papers can be found on them or Peggy. It is as if they just disappeared. It is well known how these families intermarried and it is quite confusing to sort out all the different branches of this huge family tree.

It is assumed that Peggy’s husband ___?__ STEVENS died prior to the late 1830’s when Peggy and her children started traveling west. For a time they were in Sumter County, AL. John DARDEN remained there until his death. Peggy STEVENS, Margaret STEVENS, and Reddick DARDEN (Peggy’s son by William Billy DARDEN) settled in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Peggy STEVENS’ headstone gives the date of her death as 20 May 1862. Her daughter Margaret STEVENS GREEN and Reddick DARDEN are all buried in the same Lauderdale Cemetery. William Jackson DARDEN (Peggy’s son by William Billy DARDEN) eventually settled in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. Barnabas STEVENS (son of Peggy __?__), eventually settled in West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana and married Pauline DUPUY in 1853.

At one time, I was told that her maiden name MAY have been Thomson. Someone saw this on the internet and that news traveled quickly as a FACT. There is no evidence to support this fact-it was a hunch! Nothing has been found to support this theory.

I think that Peggy married into the Barnabas STEVENS’ family through either William or Oates STEVENS because my gggrandfather Barnabas STEVENS (Peggy’s son) named his children some very familiar names - William Thomas STEVENS, John Franklin STEVENS, Mary Pauline Dupuy STEVENS, Reddick Darden STEVENS, Henry Watkins Allen STEVENS, Hattie Gilbert STEVENS, Stephen Oates STEVENS and Isabelle Stella STEVENS.

Does anyone have information on WILLIAM STEVENS OR OATES STEVENS, sons of Barnabas and Lydia OATES STEVENS??? Does anyone have a MARGARET OR PEGGY DARDEN OR STEVENS in their family? These people did exist! I have been searching for them for over about 20 years!

Note: There was a Margaret Peggy HARGROVE but her dates do not agree with the life events of Peggy__?__. Thank you for any help given!
