Dare County Library is pleased to announce the availability of its new Dare County Digital Heritage Collection of Historical Newspapers consisting of over 10,000 issues covering 70 years of the Dare County Times (1935-1945) and The Coastland Times (1951-2009). This collection has an online keyword searchable index. Because these newspapers cover Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell and Currituck counties, the information is invaluable in documenting life on the Outer Banks and surrounding areas throughout this historic period. This project is made possible through funding from the Outer Banks Community Foundation and the Dare County Library and through an agreement between Times Printing Company, Inc., publishers of the Dare County Times and The Coastland Times newspapers, and Dare County Library allowing for free public online access to past issues of these newspapers.

Each page of each issue of the newspaper is scanned into images and the full text of the newspapers including articles, advertisements, photo captions and obituaries is searchable by keyword so that individuals seeking information will only have to type in their search terms, saving untold hours of time from having to look through many reels of microfilm. Up until now, these newspapers were only available in print and microfilm requiring labor-intensive page-by-page queries even if a date is known.

To access this collection from any internet computer from home, school, work, or in the library, go to and click on the “Historical Newspaper Collection” link. You can search one or more key words for the entire run or limit your search to a particular year, month, and/or day of the scanned images of the newspapers. All scanned images of the newspapers that match your search terms display in a list. Select a match from the list to display that particular newspaper page image. To locate the first instance of your search term on that page, click the Magnifying Glass Find icon on the Adobe toolbar and enter the search again so that it highlights on the page. Click the right arrow next to the Find search box each time you want to highlight the next occurrence of your search on that page. (If the Magnifying Glass is not displayed on your Adobe toolbar, right-click on the toolbar, click Edit, then click Find.) Try different searches to look for “Wright Brothers” or “Lost Colony” or “moving the lighthouse” or any search of your choosing. When you want to search a phrase, surround your search within quotes as in “Bodie Island Lighthouse” to find that exact phrase instead of results that may have the words of your search scattered throughout the page in different articles. Try different ways to search someone’s name in case middle names, initials, or nicknames were used in different newspaper articles. Contact the library for assistance.

The wealth of information including major events, politics, obituaries, sports, school news, community and family events, and tourism document the history and current events of the Outer Banks are freely accessible to researchers, authors, students, genealogists, historians, and others interested in our rich history. Dare County Library is committed to preserving and allowing free public access to our rich Outer Banks history for present and future researchers. Dare County Library wishes to acknowledge Times Publishing Company, Inc. and the Outer Banks Community Foundation for their roles in helping to make this significant collection available.
