Re: Bowman Family

There are at least 3 different Bowman families involved in the early settlement of Burke / Catawba counties.
1)Daniel and Henry (and possibly a John) are of German extraction, with Daniel settling first in the vicinity of Newton. Most of the Bowman families of Alexander County seem to descend from Daniel.
2)John Bowman, Sheriff of Burke County in 1780 married Grace Greenlee. He was Scots or Scots-Irish, and appears to have been the first of his line to come to America, because his will leaves a legacy for any of his brothers who might come to America. John Bowman was an ardent supporter of Independence and was a Whig Captain at the Battle of Ramsour's Mill in June 1780 where he suffered mortal wounds and died within days of the battle, and is buried along with several other fallen Whig / Patriot captains on the battleground in Lincolnton. Grace Greenlee supposedly rode from Quaker Meadows to tend her dying husband. Their only child, a daughter, married a Tate and has descendants in the Burke county area.
3) Edward Bowman moved with his family from vicinity of Amherst County, Va. to Burke County circa 1770, settling in the vicinity of the Lovelady Ford on the Catawba close to Granite Falls. His sons include Marshall, who moved after the Revolution to Kanawha County, (West) Virginia, Shepherd, Groves and probably Edward, Gilbert and (another) John. Charles Bowman wrote a partial genealogy of this family in 1912. Much of this family moved on to Missouri about 1820-1830. Edward Bowman appears to have been a son of Edward Bowman Jr. who died in Virginia about 1735. If this is correct the family descends from Robert Bowman SR (abt 1600-1671) who settled in the Roxford Hundred-Bermuca Hundred of Henrico County in the part now Chesterfield County, before 1660. The line appears to be Robert Sr., Robert Jr and Sarah, Edward Sr and Margaret, Edward Jr., Edward III (who moved to Burke County).
