Dear Shelly and John:
Attached is a photograph of the Baynes Store that John described so eloquently. His word picture certainly brought back memories of the old country stores, of which Baynes was an archetype.
I believe that James Rainey (Jimmy) Baynes (1855-1923) and Leonidas Franklin Harrelson (1859-1939) were very earlier owners and operators of the Baynes Store. Whether they were the first and built the building I have been unable to determine. However, I do believe that the Baynes Community in south Caswell County was named for James Rainey (Jimmy) Baynes.
Note that in 1891 James Rainey (Jimmy) Baynes married Laura Louella Harrelson (1860-1940), the sister of his business partner. The couple had at least three children.
I do hope that others will share their memories and photographs of these community institutions.
