Although it doesn't totally answer your question, the Elizabeth City newspaper "The Economist" had an notice in 19 Jun 1903 issue which stated "Remarkable Negro Dead - Rev. Zion H. Berry died at his home near Mt. Hermon Church in Pasquotank County last Sunday AM - 73 years old. He was the son of a white woman from Camden County.
The abstracter (Greg Williams) noted that it was a good story.
