Thank you for responding. I have not been looking at that side of the family for some time and am a bit fuzzy about what I thought I once knew - and that was very little. I am trying to trace my Letterman/Leatherman/ Leathermon ancestors. There is a gap between ones in Pennsylvania who moved to N.C. and ones that moved from N.C. to MO.
Jonas/Johannes Letterman/Leatherman/Leathermon was b July 12, 1792, in NC (probably the SW part of the state) to parents who were or had been German Bretheren/Dunkard church members. He married April 9, 1814, Burke Co., NC, Alphaeus/Alfreda/Aleyfodus Hughes/Hughs (in different documents her name is spelled in many ways) who was born ca 1800 (possible dates July 1, 1800 or January 5, 1803)probably in N.C. She died in MO in 1898. She had children born in N.C. named Lucinda, Temperance,Hannah, Keziah R., John Dewald, Jonas, Garrett D., and my forebear Israel born January 26, 1825, Buncombe Co., N.C. In KY she had a son named Francis C.M. (Frank). In Indiana she had children Highla Elmira, Mary M., John H., and Louisa.
Do any of these names and places run in your Hughes family line? Were any of your family Dunkards? Do you know of any female Hughes family member with a name anything close to being something that might sound like any of the names of my Hughes maternal forebear?
I have no direct information about any Hughes except that I have just provided. I am afraid that in this venture, I will be only a taker and not a giver - at least until I can identify my Hughes forebears.
