The NC Leatherman family history has been traced to Mattstall, Germany to the Paltinate or Alsace Region. In Sept., 1711 Johann Tewalt (later Teobald Lederman) a linenweaver, and his wife, Anna Maria Engle recorded their first child's birth. Four other children were born in Germany , including Johann Nicholas, our ancestor. He was baptized September 7, 1724 at Dehlingen Lutheran Church. Because of religious persecution and economic privation the family migrated to Philadelphia aboard the James Goodwill in 1727.

Johann/John Hans Theobald Lederman - (1700) w/ Anna Maria Engle (1700)
Nicholas Leatherman (1724-1782) w/ Anna Maria Elizabeth (surname unknown)
Christian Leatherman (1760 - 1818) w/ Anna Barbara Eder (His home is still standing in Maryland near Fredericksburg.)
Issac Leatherman (1780 - 1850) w/ Mary Banren
Rudolph Leatherman (1807 - 1863) w/ Harriet Rayfel/Raffiel/Rayfield (1822 - 1915) Rudolph Leatherman left Lincoln Co. heading west to look for his three sons who were then fighting in the Confederate Army. He never returned home or was ever heard from. Family believes that he was killed by bushwackers.

I do not have The Leatherman Family Book which was written in 1940. Our family has it's lineage but it is not expanded. It is very possible that Christian Leatherman had a brother by the name of John. Christian did live in Maryland. They were Brethren or Dunkers and I believe they quite possible may have worshipped in the Dunker's Church located on the Sharpsburg, MD, Civil War Battlefield. John being a much used name in our family going back to Johann Tewalt Lederman.

I am hoping that maybe someone on these lists might have futher information or a copy of the Leatherman Book.
