I don't know but have to wonder if some of this name shuffling is a result of men taking native consorts before, during or after marriages to women who were white or living white. Maybe the kids took their mother's maiden name of surname at the time they were born - if when someone suddenly appears from under a cabbage leaf - or disappears under one in this era if it involved native blood on one side or the other. DNA is the only answer in such cases IF you have someone to do the test. I'm trying to find a direct descendant to do it but so far have only two whose male line is broken by a woman grand or great grandmother making it not a straight son to father to grandfather, etc.
