Read with interest all queries about Cranberry Iron and Coal Mine. Here's my additional information from family folklore:

My great-great grandfather Walter Phillips was hired by the Pennsylvania rail company that had a controlling interest in Cranberry Coal. He moved with his wife (Mary Stidworthy) and three children from New Jersey to Cranberry around 1880 and worked as a foreman in the mine and also as lay preacher for the area and worked to set up a school in Cranberry, hiring a school teacher from Wyethville VA.

He died Nov 1 1887 and is buried in the Cranberry Cemetary behind the Cranberry High School. According to family tales, the miners collected a fund to erect the tombstone for his grave. His wife Mary died about a year later and the (by now 6) children moved back up to New Jersey to live with relatives.
