Surnames: Phoenix, La France
Washington County - New York State - Town of Whitehall

We are looking for any information on the Phoenix family of Whitehall NY. Solomon Phoenix came to NY from Canada in 1838 when he would have been about 11 years old. We don't know if he got married in Whitehall NY. He shows up in the 1850/60 census and he also shows up in the 1900 census as living
in Whitehall NY. Our family records show he died sometime in 1896, but that isn't correct. Apparently, the rest of the family couldn't remember when he died or where he was buried. Solomon was born in 1827 in August or September, in Canada. There is no information
on Solomon's parents.

His wife, Catherine (nee McNamara) Phoenix, also came from Canada. Her birthdate is listed in family records as 12/20/1832. She died in May of 1887. Since several Phoenix family members still show in the 1900 census in Whitehall, it is likely that she is buried in the area. Catherine's mother was 100% Indian, tribe unknown. Her father was 100% Irish, and his name was Patrick McNamara.

Solomon and Catherine had the following children:

Name Birth Date Death Date
William 4/24/1850 10/24/1925
Francis 4/12/1852 same day?
Joseph 10/3/1855 12/13/1932
George 5/20/1858 9/5/1924
Aurelia 4/3/1861 3/14/1929
John 10/6/1863 10/10/1948
Minnie 6/13/1866 3/26/1944
Frederick C. 11/21/1870 3/5/1932
Emma 10/31/1869 1875
Julia 6/13/1873 2/25/1952
Jennie 7/15/1878 7/15/1878

The 1900 census shows Solomon still in Whitehall; he is in the same dwelling as his son, but living with the La France family at the same dwelling. Solomon is listed under the La France family names as a "boarder".

I have seen other references made to the Phoenix name on this web site.

1. The Phoenix Hotel
2. A boat named the Phoenix
3. Two Phoenix brothers listed as witnesses to a wedding.

I should point out that some of the Phoenix family moved to the Troy NY area by the late 1800s.

Can anyone help??
