Burial and Death Records for Francis Mcdonald of Ovid

I've been researching a Francis Mcdonald from Ovid. He was born in 1830 in County Louth, Ireland. He came to America in 1852 and moved to Ovid, New York around 1855. He married Julia Murphy at that same time. He was in the New York 3rd Artillery during the Civil War. I can trace him in Ovid all the way until his death in 1910.

I have found three different obituaries for him. He died on 23 Nov 1910. However, I can find no death or burial records. The obituaries and further newspaper notices mention there was a funeral mass at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ovid. I contacted Holy Cross, but they have no burial record for him.

I also contacted the town clerk who pointed me to the town historian about his death record. They have no death record for him. I also checked the New York State Death Index that was just released to the public thanks to the Reclaim the Records group. There is no death record for Francis Mcdonald at the state level either.

Does anyone have any ideas about why I'm not finding any death or burial records or any tips to help me find more information about his death? I appreciate your help.
