Hello William,

My paternal 4th gr-grandfather was Abraham Egbert, b. 19 Mar 1777 on Staten Island. He married first, Mary Sutliff, then second, Emeline Sutton/Smith(?). Abraham was the son of Abraham Egbert (1736-1813/1817) and Elizabeth VanClief/Cleef/Clef. There seems to be some confusion about this family and their connection to Monmouth County, NJ.

Some on-line trees show Elizabeth as a daughter of Derick/Richard Van Cleef and Elizabeth Leeke of Monmouth Co., NJ. Derick's parents were Benjamin Van Cleef and Hendrickje Dirckse Sutphin. Hendrickje was my 7th gr-Aunt on my mother's side.

Abraham Egbert and Elizabeth Van Clief had at least Benjamin (1768-1848); Sarah (1770-1845); James (1772-1847); Catharine (1773-1851); William (1774-1796) and Abraham (1777-1866).

There was a Benjamin Van Clief family on Staten Island whose wife was Sarah. Elizabeth may be from this group. I am not convinced that these two Van Clief families share a common ancestor.

I have a lot of work to do on these families, but have quite a bit of Egbert info I am willing to share.

A grandson of Abraham and Elizabeth, Abram William Egbert (1824-1901) married a girl named Angeline Egbert (1823-1890). Angeline was the daughter of Tunis Egbert (1792-1860) and Margaret Crocheron (1793-1869). Abraham and Angeline were third cousins, so I have two Egbert direct lines.

I would be happy to share anything of interest on the Egberts. You may contact me directly at

Regards, Nancy Cutler

PS - I am originally from Monmouth County, so maybe can help with other lines in that area.
