Seeking information on Crawford Olby and his family who resided in New Hartford in the early 1800s. This family, consisting of free African Americans, likely came to New Hartford from Connecticut prior to 1810. At least one of Crawford's daughters was kidnapped by slave traders prior to 1815. One known son, Laban Olby, moved to North Brookfield, NY in 1815 where he worked first as a blacksmith and storekeeper, and later built and ran the first hotel there. Thank you.
