Hi Beth,

Our Klems, Anna Maria Klem and her first cousin and husband, Johann Baptist Klem came to Rochester, Monroe County, New York in 1816. They came from Kittersburg, Baden-Wurtemberg, Germany not far from Strasburg in France, along the Rhine river there.

We are still researching where the Baptist middle name came from because we have not verified this data yet. It is noted in published works of the times but his birth records do not indicate a middle name. Perhaps when he was baptised or confirmed they added the middle name.

There were a lot of weavers in Marlen, Kittersburg and Goldscheuer. Johann and Anna Maria were the first from their villages (all three towns are within walking distance from each other) to travel to America. Many followed.

They were also known to change the spelling of their names because they were often mistaken for KLEIN. Max Klemm, told me this when I visited him in 1989 in Goldscheuer.

As far as I can see, the answer to your question is: I don't know. The Klem descendants have much research data in their family tree file. I'll save the printout of your questions regarding the connection and when I go into my database, I check it out.
