I went to GOOGLE EARTH and I see that scar on the terrain SE of Cuervo. I am not sure what they are pulling out of the ground there. Is it pumice or gypsum? The geology in the area is dominated by sandstone and limestone. The rock layers are very porous in areas. As you get closer to Santa Rosa witness the sink holes and the very deep Blue Hole dive spot. If you go directly north of Cuervo a speculator has put up a drilling rig. I am not sure if this natural gas or oil speculation, but clearly visible on GE at 35 degrees 06'34.40"N/ 104 degrees 26'16.59"W. I am only guessing but the population of Cuervo probably topped out at 150-200, if that. Most people would shop and attend church in Santa Rosa, so Cuervo was never more than a satelite of Santa Rosa. After WWII the young men left the ranches for the big cities and gradually families moved away. Better paying jobs and the amenities of modern life were to great to resist compared to the hardships and uncertainty of life on the land. I hope that is informative.
