David D. VanAuken, a lifelong resident of Montague, died last Thurs. at the
home of daughter, Mrs. Lulu Schafer, after a long illness. He was born
January 14, 1854 in Montague and was the son of Mrs. and Mrs. Martin
VanAuken. He was twice married. His first wife, Jane Davenport, who at
her death left two daughters, Mrs. Stella VanGorder, of Branchville, and
Mrs. L. Homideau, of Huntsville. His second wife, Jennie Owen, died about
five years ago and of this union the following children survive: Mrs. Melvin
Schafer, of Montague; the misses Hettie and Laura VanAuken, of Branchville;
Irving, of Livington, NJ; Loren, of Matamoras, PA; Lawrence of Branchville;
and David, of Trenton. He also leaves one brother, James VanAuken, of
Montague and one sister, Mrs. DeWitt Little, of Montague. Funeral services
were held in the Montague Reformed church, interment was in the Montague
