A CLARK relation of ours (Hon. Ephraim CLARK of Yolo Co., CA) is said to be a cousin of James Beauchamp "Champ" CLARK, famous U.S. Representative from Pike County in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Champ CLARK's father is known to be Dr. John Hampton CLARK "of New Jersey"; our CLARK's are also from NJ, and their genealogy is fairly well known, yet I can see no connection at this point.

I have found a source -- Rossiter Johnson, ed. 1904. Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans, Vol. II. Biographical Soc., Boston (contents available on -- that gives his parents as Adrial CLARK and Elizabeth ARCHER.

Oddly, though, the Gloucester Co. marriage records show only these two records for these names:

CLARK, Adrial to Elizabeth HILLMAN 18 Feb 1812
CRAMER, Charles to Elizabeth ARCHER 1 Dec 1836

Adrial CLARK appears consistently in the censuses of Glouchester Co., NJ, from 1784 to 1802. He appears to be the same Adrial CLARK as the Revolutionary Patriot buried near Port Republick, NJ.

Lastly, and I can't find the reference at this instant, another source says Adrial CLARK is a descendant of one Thomas CLARK, said to be a crewmember on the Mayflower. Yet I can find no source that shows that crewmember as leaving any children in the U.S.

Any further information on Champ CLARK's genealogy much welcomed.

P.S. It is also possible that our "Honorable Ephraim" is cousin to Champ through either of his two sisters, because we have THOMPSON's and HALEY's in our line, and those are the surnames of their husbands. (It would then be a relationship by marriage, not by blood.) Because it may have been a mistake to have made the obvious assumption that Ephraim CLARK and Champ CLARK are related through their CLARK ancestors!
