In January 1900, Bert Leroy Smith assaulted two of the Davis sisters, Rose and Mary Alma. The result was Rose's daughter, Florence, and Mary Alma's son, Walter, both born the first week of September, within 6 days of each other. Mary Alma married Smith in June 1900. Rose, who was described in the newspaper as an "idiot", eventually married Nelson Monroe, who was divorced and the same age as her father, James B. Davis. They had two sons together before Monroe died in 1912 and Rose in 1920.

It took me a while to piece all of this together. I ran across a second census record for Smith in 1900 that had him in jail. The first one was him living with the Davis family, although interestingly, Mary Alma was not. I have not located her in a census record in 1900. Thanks to the State Historical Society, they located the newspaper clippings about the sheriff going to Coldwater, MI to retrieve Smith. Florence's death record listed Smith as her father.

Lots of drama in Palmyra and vicinity in 1900.
