Alvin Lee West Sr., known to all as Lee, 85, St. Clair, departed this life Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.

Lee, son of the late John Cecil West and wife Grace Artessa, nee Campbell, was born Nov. 29, 1928, in Leasburg. He was united in marriage to Edna Nellie Keyes June 5, 1951, and four children came to bless this union.

Lee was a Christian of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed visiting St. Clair Southern Baptist Church, St. Clair, as well as Crossroads Baptist Church, Leasburg. He was proud to have served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army Air Corps, entering Dec. 2, 1950, and receiving his honorable discharge Dec. 6, 1952. Lee was also a member and past commander of American Legion Post 456, Leasburg. In the mid- 1950s, he established Lee West Hauling, a company that he owned and operated to haul for N.B. West Paving Company. He was a proud retiree of Operating Engineers Union Local 513, St. Louis. Lee had a variety of interests throughout his life including spending time outdoors, horseback riding, cutting grass and fishing. He was an accomplished banjo player, who enjoyed both listening to and playing country and gospel music. Lee was a friendly, outgoing man, who never knew a stranger and loved telling jokes. Lee had a special affection for his pet Chihuahua, Mickey. What meant most to him was time spent with his family. His children and grandchildren held a special place in his heart, as he did in theirs. The love they shared and many precious memories they created will be cherished by all of them.

Lee is survived by two sons, Alvin Lee West Jr., known to all as Lee, and wife Christie, and Michael Lee West, all of St. Clair; two daughters, Debra West, Sullivan, and Connie Marrocco and husband Vincent, St. Clair; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Nellie West; parents, John Cecil and Grace Artessa West; three brothers, Clyde West, Clark West and Norman West; and two sisters, Opal Everson and Eva Strothcamp.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 4, at Russell Colonial Funeral Home, St. Clair, with the Rev. Bill Savage officiating.

Interment was in Cross Roads Cemetery, Leasburg.

Memorials may be given to Warren "Spike" Huff for the Home Folks Acoustic Music House.
