Carol Sue Smith was born at Pacific on Sept. 19, 1939, the daughter of the late James F. Taggart, and his wife, Lucille (nee Le Curu), and passed away at the Jewish Hospital in St. Louis on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1987, in her 49th year.
She received her schooling in Union and graduated from Union High School in 1957. On Oct. 27, 1962, she was united in marriage to Wayne H. Smith. They made their home here in Union and two sons were born to this marriage.
Mrs. Smith worked at various places in the Union area. She had been very active in the Union Khoury League for a number of years and also had been a member of the Union Ladies Auxiliary of the Union Fire Department until her health failed. In 1984 they moved to Sullivan and Carol was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of St. Clair. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Virgil "Butch" Thompson.
Those who survive are her husband, Wayne Smith of Sullivan; two sons, Virgil James Smith of Marthasville, and Christopher E. Smith and his wife, Tina of Union; two step-daughters, Tammie Lynn Schuttenberg and her husband, Teddy of Union and Margie Lee Sullentrup and her husband, Jim, also of Union; seven grandchildren, Brandie, Stephanie, Ashley, Nathan Allen, Brittany, Regeena and Dawn; three step-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Clyde and Rose Smith of St. Clair, Treecie Lewis, Helen and Tom Warren and Marvin Meyer, all of Union; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 7, 1987 from the Oltmann Funeral Home in Union, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Thomas Smith. Interment followed in the Prospect Cemetery at Lonedell.
