Helen Marian (Maki) Lewis was born on June 22, 1942 in Finlayson, Minnesota. She attended Finlayson Public School and graduated from Finlayson High School in 1960. After high school Marian moved to Minneapolis and worked at the Prudential Insurance Company. She married Kenny Lewis in 1962 and they both continued working in Minneapolis. In 1963 they moved back to Finlayson to work on the Lewis family farm. Ken and Marian have two sons, David and Donald. David Lewis was born in 1963 and Donald in 1965.
After some of Ken Lewis' brothers left the farm for other employment Ken, Marian and their sons continued to operate the Lewis farm. Marian served on the Finlayson School Board for many years. She obtained a position in 1985 at the DAC, which later came to be known as PHASE. Ken and Marian moved into Sandstone in 2004 and Marian continued to work at PHASE until 2014 when she suffered a stroke and was unable to continue working. She had worked at PHASE for 29 years. Marian was a faithful attendee at Sandstone Evangelical Free Church where she taught Sunday School for many years as well as playing the organ for church activities. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and gave away many of her finished project as gifts to family and friends.
Marian and Ken were married for 52 years and Ken passed away in 2015. Marian’s parents Eino and Ina Maki, brother Robert Sandback and sister Dorothy Hansen, preceded Marian in death. Marian passed away at her home in Sandstone, MN on May 11, 2019. Marian is survived by her sons David (Pam) Lewis, and Donald (Robyn) Lewis of Finlayson, grandchildren, Amber (Winfield Blenman), Andrea (Mitch Cabak), Amanda (Antonio Carter) and David Lewis (Bree Larson), seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
In memory of Marian in lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Grindstone Lake Bible Camp.
A memorial service is planned for Marian on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the Sandstone Evangelical Free Church at 11 a.m., with Pastor Chris Cundiff officiating. Visitation will take place Tuesday, May 14, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Methven Funeral Chapel in Sandstone, MN and one hour prior to the service at the church.
