Carl Godfrey Nelson, age 91, formerly of Hinckley, MN passed away on April 11, 2019 at the Sandstone Health Care Center with his family by his side. Carl was born on October 17, 1927 to Martin and Anna Nelson and was the youngest of five boys. He grew up on the family farm just north of Friesland. They milked cows and grew strawberries and rutabagas. He attended the Friesland School and the Presbyterian church in Friesland. He was drafted into the United States Army during WW2 where he served faithfully until his honorable discharge. Returning home, he attended Ag school in Sandstone, then with his brother, Norman, bought a farm east of Hinckley in 1950, and they started Nelson Brothers Beef Ranch. Farming was a big part of his life and he loved tending to the livestock. It was a lot of hard work clearing land and turning it into productive farmland.
On October 12, 1963 he was united in marriage to Patsy Carlson in Austin, Texas. They made their home east of Hinckley, raising three boys, Loren, Larry and Myron. After 40 years of successful farming, he retired. Carl and Patsy enjoyed their retirement, spending their winters in Texas, building a new retirement home, and continuing to help out on the farm which Larry and Myron now operate. In 2003 his best friend and wife, Patsy, passed away. He continued to live in their home on Log Cabin Road in Hinckley, and in 2018, after some health complications, he moved to the Sandstone Nursing Home.
Carl loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. He served on the Clover Town Board for over 30 years. But most of all, he committed his life to Christ as a young man and purposed to live and provide a godly home. He was a faithful member of Sandstone Evangelical Free Church where he served in many different capacities. He was a good husband, father and provider. His godly example and influence will surely not be lost or forgotten. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sons, Loren (Rebecca) of Hinckley, Larry (Brenda) of Hinckley and Myron (Maia) of Hinckley; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Carol Nelson and Carolyn Nelson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Anna Nelson; and brothers Harry, Reiner, Vernor and Norman.
The family would also like to thank the staff at the Sandstone Nursing Home and St. Croix Hospice. Their gentleness and compassion is very much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Grindstone Lake Bible Camp.
A funeral service is planned for Carl at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at the Sandstone Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Chris Cundiff officiating. Visitation will take place Wednesday evening, April 17 at the Methven Funeral Home Chapel in Sandstone from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will follow the service at the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Friesland, MN.
