Joseph William Benton (Joe), age 84, of Finlayson, MN, grew up in Holyoke, MN, graduating in 1950 from Wrenshall High School. Joe entered the Air Force in 1951 where he was stationed in Denver, CO. While being stationed in Denver Joe married Ruth from Superior, WI. They had four children and moved all over the United States. He worked for UNIVAC from 1956 until 1975 when he decided to try his hand at farming. Joe was also a teacher, engineer, handyman, mechanic, repair man, assembler, and was talented in many different areas. He loved flying, traveling, socializing, spending time outdoors in the woods, and his family. Joe also participated in activities and organizations that benefited others, such as the DAV, the honor guard, and helping with transportation for veterans. Loved and missed by many, Joe leaves his family and friends with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.
Joe is preceded in death by his mother, Eliza Jane Benton; father, Earl Lonzo Benton; siblings, Marie Baker (Charles), Agnes Longshore (Orson), Charles Embree (Opal), Jack Embree (Marge), Thomas Embree (Mary), Martha Reinke (Albert), Irene Randall (John), and Asa Embree (Delores).
Joe is survived by his children, Linda Jo Stromgren (Daniel) of Cambridge, MN, Joseph Charles Benton (Marta) of Hinckley, MN, Jay Allen Benton (Tracey) of Blaine, MN, Virginia Agnes Benton (David) of New Hope, MN; sister in law, Delores Embree of California; 7 grandchildren, Vennessa T. Stromgren, Daniel T. Stromgren, Tyler D. Stromgren, Timothy J. Stromgren, Shane A. Benton, Jaycie M. Jendro and Joshua J. Benton; 20 great grandchildren, Tucker, Leah, Chase, Daniel, Lexi, Jayden, Alexander, Sebastien, Cosentene, Labrandus, Trevor, Makayla, Caleb, Nathaniel, Alexandra, Jakob, Aubrielle, Teigan; Connor, Stella, and many special nieces and nephews!
A funeral service is planned for Joe at 12 p.m. on October 23, 2017 at Oak Lake Lutheran Church in Kerrick, MN, with Pastor Nate Anderson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Holyoke Cemetery with military honors.
