Lyle Anton Mortenson was born on September 25, 1933 in Hinckley, MN to Fritz and Florence Mortenson. He attended Hinckley School and graduated in 1951. Lyle then went on to play minor league baseball for the Duluth Dukes as a pitcher. He joined the Army in 1954 and served until 1956, when he became a member of the American Legion for the remainder of his life. Lyle married Mary Theresa Goggin on February 18, 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the couple made their home in Hinckley raising 7 children. Lyle worked as a Federal Corrections Officer at FCI in Sandstone, MN and retired as a pipefitter for the institution. He was very active in the Hinckley community during his life as he played baseball for the Hinckley Knights, was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, a volunteer Fireman for 25 years, and was a long time member of the American Legion. Lyle enjoyed all sports, as well as being outdoors hunting and fishing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters Lucille Cabak, Frances “Toots” Kurkowski, and Irene Cates.

Lyle is survived by his wife Mary, 2 sons David (Mary) Mortenson, Lyle (Denise) Mortenson, 5 daughters Peggy Mortenson, Sharon (Rod) Mettling, Carol (Craig) Bostrom, Teresa Hedberg, Renee (Mike) Brodzinski, 27 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters Arlene Hart, Virginia Ellis, 2 brothers Dean Mortenson and Raymond Lundquist.

Mass of Christian Burial 2:00pm Friday, September 8, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hinckley, MN with visitation 1 hour prior to services. Burial at Rosehill Cemetery in Hinckley with full military honors by the Hinckley Honor Guard.
