Leona Schoenrock, 97, Finlayson, died Wednesday, August 23, 2017 in Essentia Sandstone Health Care Center. She was born on September 15, 1919 to Otto and Margaret Behrman in Pine Lake Twp., Pine County where she grew up and attended the Pine Lake Country School. Leona started working at Hardy’s Lodge on Pine Lake and later became a nanny in the Summit area of St. Paul. She later helped her family establish the Bungalow Park Resort on Big Pine Lake. Leona also worked at the Ernie Nordholm Cafe in Finlayson. On April 26, 1941, Leona married Ernest Schoenrock in Immanuel Lutheran Church Giese. They farmed in Wagner Twp. and Leona was an excellent homemaker through the years. She canned, created quilts and embroidery, and liked to play cards with family and friends. Leona was a very devoted member to Immanuel Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. Through the years, Leona and Ernest loved to travel and winter in Texas. Leona’s greatest love was her family. She truly loved babysitting her grandchildren and spending time with her family. She was able to live at her home alone until the last two weeks of her final illness. At her home, she was honored to display her U.S. Flag and was proud of her sons’ service to our country.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest in 2003; her parents: Otto and Margaret Behrman; sister: Frieda Homdrom and brother: Earl Behrman.
She will be lovingly remembered by her four children: Lyle (May) Schoenrock of St. Paul; Larry (Sandy) Schoenrock of Finlayson; Dareld (Sue) Schoenrock of Finlayson; and Lois (Jerry) Pizzella of Finlayson; 22 grandchildren: Todd, John, Lisa, Brenda, Maria, Loretta, Tobin, Sara, Richard, Kirk, Donovan, Troy, Tim, Rob, Angela, Lil' Ernie, Mark, Jeff, Linda, Brian, Jim, and Justin; 42 great grandchildren; sister: Bernice Schneider of Stillwater; brother-in-law: Gene Peterson of Cambridge; special nephew: Ron (Lynn) Schneider of St. Cloud; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Saturday, August 26, 2017 in Methven Funeral Home, 114 5th St., Sandstone and continue Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 1:00 until the 1:30 PM service in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Giese. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Giese.
