Mary Elizabeth Deming died on April 27, 2017 of pancreatic cancer at her home in Hinckley, MN. Funeral services will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, in Hinckley with Fr. Joseph Sirba celebrating the Mass at 11:30 am on May 6, 2017. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.
Mary was born on October 21, 1927 in International Falls, MN to Edward and Mabel Headsten, the youngest of three children.
A near idyllic youth centered on family, friends, school and church activities. Following high school Mary moved on to the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis earning a BA degree in Sociology and psychology, and enjoyed membership in Kappa Delta social sorority. She was a Social Worker for many years both in County Welfare and State Hospitals at Moose Lake and Cambridge, MN.
Mary married Ken Deming in 1958. They had two sons, Tom & Steven. Ken died of heart disease in 1975. Although born and raised in the Episcopal Church, a life changing decision led her to Confirmation in the Catholic Church and she has been active there. She had also been active in civic affairs primarily since her retirement, serving on the Hinckley Library Board, Fire Museum Board, St. Catherine’s Circle, Hinckley Planning Commission, Essentia Health Sandstone Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Pine Hospital District Board.
Although essentially a private person, Mary would share her world view on local, national and global issues with anyone of like mind.
Mary’s parents preceded her in death as did her brother Don, sister Nancy, and husband Ken. She is survived by sons, Tom and Steven, two grandchildren, Logan and Scottie Elizabeth Deming, many nieces and nephews and their families, and brother-in-law Adren Mann.
Inurnment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hinckley.
