Alvin Leroy Petersen was born February 5, 1923 on his parents’ homestead northeast of Askov, Minnesota. He was the last child born to Peter Degn and Kirsten Marie (Jepsen) Petersen.

Alvin attended H.C. Andersen School in Askov, where he graduated in 1941. In the fall of ’41, Alvin entered the Coast Guard. He served a total of 4 years and 10 months. Alvin spent a short time in New York and was stationed in Alaska. After discharge, Alvin returned to spend a few years helping at home, then worked at an ore mine near Hibbing for a year. In 1950 Alvin moved to the Twin Cities to work. He started at Bros, then worked at Flour City Ornamental Iron for 20 years until his retirement. Alvin returned to Askov, where he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He first purchased a small home, then moved to Vossavangen apartments. In May of 2014 Alvin moved to Elderwood Assisted Living in Hinckley.

During his younger days Alvin enjoyed fishing and hunting with his friends, and spending time with his brothers and sister and their families. Though Alvin never married, he loved to keep track of his nieces and nephews and enjoyed all the good times they got to share with him.

Alvin passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at the age of 94.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, his 5 brothers (Peter, Richard, Viggo, Roy, and Albert), his sister, Clara Sorensen, and a set of twin sisters, Lillian and Vivian, who passed away before he was born, as well as several nephews and nieces. He is survived by many nieces and nephews who will treasure fond memories of their beloved uncle.

A memorial service is planned for Alvin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with Pastor Deb Hanson-Carlson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery following the service.
