Jantje “Jenny” Baldwin, age 81, died on Friday, June 5, 2009
Jenny was born on March 6, 1928 in Rolde, Netherlands. She was the tenth child of Peter and Dora Osterdyk. The family immigrated to the United States in 1930 and resided in South Dakota for a short time before settling in Kanabec County.
Jenny married George W. Baldwin on Sept. 16, 1946 at Calvary Lutheran Church. As a lifetime member, she was active on the church council and was a “church basement lady.”
In 1961, Jenny and George became owners of the Mora Bakery and in 1979 opened an adjoining restaurant they named the Dutch Huis, decorated in a Dutch motif reflecting Jenny’s pride in her heritage. She was an active business woman for many years, during which she served on the Chamber of Commerce and various other committees in the community.
Jenny enjoyed fishing, playing cards, snowmobiling and watching sports (especially the Vikings). She also loved spending time with her family and traveling. She often combined the love of both, taking trips with family members to Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand and Holland. Jenny had an adventurous spirit. In the last four years she went parasailing in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and tried white water rafting for the first time in Montana. She spent the winter months in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas with friends from all over the country, including “forever friend” Harry Gottman.
Preceding her in death were her husband George, her parents, three brothers and four sisters.
She is survived by her children; Regina (Carl) Nerison of New Brighton, George (Diane) Baldwin of Mora, Ronda Bliss (Robert McCormack) of Longville, Greg (Debbie) Baldwin of Mora and Grant Baldwin of Mora; sister; Pietje Heim of Rochester; brothers; Gerrett (Marian) of Brunswick and Casey (Amelia) of Billings, Montana; sister-in-law; Dorothy Baldwin of Backus; and grandchildren Nathan Bliss (Kendra Stegner) Kecia Jacobson (Tim) Baskin, Robin (Erica) Bliss, Brett (Joelle) Baldwin, Becky (Mike) Hatton, Kyle Bliss, Kyler Nerison.
