Martin Haut served with the German army in 1870-1871, then emigrated to America and established a brickyard southwest of Perham about 1875. Two of his children born in Germany: Gustav, who worked with his father at the brickyard, and Fredricka, who married Fred Seedorf.
Five more children were born here: Caroline married Charles Bahls; Albert was a salesman for Markel Implement here in Perham, and later moved to Gackel, North Dakota, where Gackel Hardware was established. The hardware store is still run by his descendants. Emma, Annie and Tillie moved to Washington State.

Caroline and Charles Bahls had fourteen children:

Edward never married.

Bernard died in infancy
