Browning Nichols grave is in Sunset Cemetery just a mile directly north of Montevideo on what was once called the Benson Rd. When entering the cemetery using the farthest north entrance, the road through makes a horseshoe pattern. His burial site is about half way aroung the loop, when a driver is facing back south, his grave is on the slope looking to the west. It is on your left.
Montevideo has a street named for him.
He was one of the half dozen proprietors of the village of Lac Qui Parle when it was the county seat. The railroad bypassed, the court house was hauled away, the records moved, and the business followed it. Browning stayed behind with the ability to dispose of all the properties the proprietors had managed. His last major sale in the village was to open a cemetery on his farm to replace the haphazard one placed on an eroding bluff. His cemetery is a half mile due west of the village. There is a grave there for the daughter of the owners of the hotel, I believe Mina Belle Brown. Lake City Minnesota claims several of the proprietors as their own, some were soldiers in the Civil War. There were photos of Browning in our album, as well as photos of the other old settlers. Best Wishes.
