For those wondering how Gertrude Couch of Picton, Ontario ended up marrying Adolfo Hickstein of Ceballos, Cuba: Gertrude's good friend was Maude Benson of Kingston, Ontario, who traveled with her Anglican priest husband to exotic locales like China and later Cuba. Maude met Adolfo (actually Adolph, as he was born in Germany and located in Cuba at the turn of the 1900s) and he mentioned that, at the age of 37, he was ready to settle down and would like to marry a respectable woman from Canada or the U.S. Maude immediately thought of her friend Gertrude, who was a maiden lady at the age of 35 who was then a Picton shopkeeper (an old maid for sure that that time), and the two began corresponding. Adolfo made the trip to Picton to meet Gertrude, and they decided to "give it a go," as the Brits say. He returned to Cuba to establish a household for them, and she followed him some time later. They were married in Ceballos. They had three children (the first, Robert, died shortly after birth; then Frederick and then Elizabeth (Betty--my mother). Adolph was a successful businessman who was able to retire at a relatively young age; the family relocated to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. They visited Picton every other year thereafter.
