Sturgis; William F. DAVENPORT, 71, 204 Pioneer Ave., died April 24, 1996, at the Fairview Living Centre, Centreville.

He was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Athens, N.Y., a son of Thomas and Cora (SCHERMERHORN) DAVENPORT.

On June 28, 1946, he married Eva EVERETTE, in Fayetteville, N.C.

He was a Sturgis resident since 1976, coming from Athens, N.Y. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army serving during World War II in Germany and France. He was employed 40 years at Grumman-Olson, retiring in 1990. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 187, Athens, N.Y., a life member of the John J. Kelley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1355, Sturgis, and a member of the Forty and Eight , Sturgis, the Sturgis Moose Lodge 547, and the Legion of the Moose 106. He was a Scoutmaster of Troop 40, Athens, N.Y., director of the Athens Drum Corps, and a volunteer fireman for the W.C. Brady Hook and Ladder. He enjoyed computers, handicrafts, photography and playing gold.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Brenda GERRY, Round Top, N.Y., and Denise MATTICK, Jenison; two sons, William S. DAVENPORT, Athens, N.Y., and David W. DAVENPORT, Sturgis; seven grandchildren, Heather DAVENPORT, Dylan GERRY, Joshua GERRY, Kaitlyn GERRY, Jordan DAVENPORT, Cameron and Kaylan DAVENPORT; four sisters, Betty DEYO and Dorothy PFEFFER, both of Coxsackie, N.Y., Agnes SPENCE, Earlton, N.Y., and Mary DeSTAFANO, Hoboken, N.J.; two brothers, Charles E. DAVENPORT, Casa Grande, Ariz., and Thomas DAVENPORT, Key Port, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Relatives and friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Rosenberg-Schipper Funeral Home, Sturgis, where the family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today and Friday and services are at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. James Bender, First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Sturgis, with military honors being conferred by the John J. Kelley VFW Post 1355 and fraternal services conducted by the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 547.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
