I am currently researching the history of Seth Hall Norris' Tannery and Grist Mill, which is located 2 miles south of Traverse City. Seth came to the area in 1851 from Racine, Wisconsin...the tannery and grist mill were located in Lelanau County, Elmwood Township. He built the first bridge over Cedar Creek and his tannery in 1858; he had 4 sons...they operated the tannery and grist mill. Seth was no longer living by the census of 1870 and his wife, Nancy, was living with their eldest son, Charles. My son-in-law and daughter live 'over the mill' and Cedar Creek runs under their house. My son-in-law has loved 'the mill' since he was a child living in the area and bought the property several years ago; I am actually working on the history as a Christmas gift to him. I need to have it ready in the next few days because I will be visiting them over the holidays. The town was called Norrisville, and later, Grelickville...Lelanau Co. Quite a bit has been written about the tannery and grist mill. Feel free to contact me and right after the holidays I can get you the information about the mill and Seth's four sons.
