Died Sunday, September 1, 2002 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. Ruth was born January 7, 1913 in Finley, North Dakota, to Frank E. and Adelaide S. (Long) Curry. She was raised in Finley and Jamestown, ND, received her bachelors from Jamestown College and her Master's in Journalism from the University of Michigan. She moved to Detroit in the early 1940's and has resided in the Richland/Gull Lake area since 1946. She taught school in North Dakota, at the Yorkville School, and retired from the Galesburg-Augusta Schools, where she taught Junior High English. Prior to teaching, she was employed in the advertising departments at Frank & Sedars Department Store in Detroit, and for Vermeulen's in Kalamazoo. After retiring from teaching, she enjoyed working at Richland Community Library. She was married in Detroit May 23, 1942 to Francis T. DeYot. He preceded her in death in 1978. She was also preceded by a daughter, Suzanne DeYot in 1994; her parents; and two brothers, Ralph and Dwight Curry. Surviving are a daughter, Jackie Light of Richland; a son, Michael DeYot of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, John "Bo" Light of Richland, and Elizabeth Light of Chicago, IL; a sister, Doris Orr of Bismarck, ND; and two nieces and two nephews. Ruth was a member of Gull Lake United Methodist Church and Friends of the Richland Community Library. In the 1950's, she and her husband were charter members of the Gull Lake Ski Club, she learned to play golf about the age of 60 and continued to play until last season, she took up cross country skiing in her 70's, was an avid reader, enjoyed sewing, knitting, weaving and correcting people's grammar. where the family will receive friends 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Gull Lake United Methodist Church 1:00 p.m. Thursday, Pastor Stephen Charnley officiating. Interment will be at Yorkville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Richland Community Library, Gull Lake United Methodist Church or Hospice Care of Southwest MI.
